Who is Dr. Mike McGee?
Michael McGee, MD, believes everyone deserves mental healthcare
with a human connection. He provides compassionate clinical care
and spiritual support to people from all walks of life. He has three
different board certifications in General Adult Psychiatry, Addiction
Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine from the American Board of
Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. McGee treats a wide range of psychiatric
conditions and offers spiritual counseling and meditation teaching
as part of his psychotherapy work.
With more than 30 years of experience in psychiatry, Dr. McGee
specializes in integrating psychiatric treatment with spiritually
informed interventions and practices. He is the creator of Awakening
Therapy, a contemplative-relational approach to psychiatric treatment,
and the WellMind method, a practice that teaches people how to use
love to heal wounds caused by trauma and neglect.
Dr. McGee graduated from Stanford University in 1979 with a bachelors
degree with distinction in biology. He then graduated in 1985 from
Stanford University School of Medicine and completed his residency
training in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
He currently serves as the chair of the resource committee for
the Northern California branch of the American Psychiatric Association,
working to support his fellow psychiatrists, reduce burnout, and
improve their clinical performance and overall wellness. He is also
involved in efforts to eliminate homelessness in San Luis Obispo
as a member of the mayors task force.
He has received several honors and awards throughout his career,
including being named Top Doctor twice by New Hampshire
Magazine and receiving the Distinguished Life Fellow award of the
American Psychiatric Association. Dr. McGee has published and presented
extensively on the topics of spirituality and recovery from addiction.
Dr. McGee strives to practice what he teaches, balancing his professional
life with time spent with loved ones, spiritual practice, volunteer
work, and outdoor activities. He is passionate about nutrition and

The Keys to Unlock a New
Kind of Freedom

The next time you run into some familiar blockage
or begin to feel unsuited to face some new and difficult personal
challenge, don't do what you've always done before. Don't try to
think your way around it. You no longer want a way around your troubles
because what goes around, comes around! What you want is to grow
beyond the level of that disturbance. And to do that, you must not
act from it.
So don't allow yourself to be pulled down into any
anxious concern or confusion over not knowing what to do about your
present condition. What you really want is an insight into your
situation, not a fight with it. The two have nothing in common.
So make it clear to yourself once and for all: nothing that hounds
you can help you.
Draw yourself back from your usual thinking. Quietly
observe it race around looking for the shelter of a conclusion it
can recognize. Have nothing to do with its frantic motion.
You've gone as far as you can go with what you know.
Now it's time to know that, so that you can let what you know go,
and let something unthinkable occur to you. Just relax.
Pressuring yourself to come up with a happy ending
to a sad or shaky situation only goes to show you still believe
that you can resolve these troubles. But if you could have, you
would have by now. Besides, your lower nature wants you to confuse
these feelings of pressure for being some kind of proof of personal
progress. It's done its job well. After all these years you're afraid
to live without this feeling of habitually prodding yourself, for
fear that without it, you might get stuck! The solution here is
to see that, in fact, you are stuck! This powerful insight releases
you from the pressure of wanting anything from yourself.
Now you've done what you can do. You've prepared the stage, your
own mind, for the arrival of a higher nature and a new kind of freedom.
But learn to expect it in the unexpected. To paraphrase the New
Testament: be ever watchful for you don't know when -- or how --
something higher will make itself known to you.
There may come a flash of insight, a clear glimpse
into some self-created cause of your own continuing inner captivity.
Or, perhaps, a sudden and sweet deep sense of wholeness will sweep
through you, a quiet but profound intuition, wherein you know yourself,
for that moment, to be one with all of that life pulsating around
and within you.
However that Light breaks into the darkened room of self, consider
each brief illumination as an appointed messenger, a heavenly herald
sent in advance of a greater freedom to come. Learn to embrace each
appearance, for regardless of what may be revealed -- to you or
about you -- these insights are not unlike the sound of the shouts
of liberation heard always just before the arrival of the liberating
forces. A new freedom always follows. Now, follow it.

Does Visualization Work

A picture is worth a thousand words. We've all
heard that saying before! This has never been truer than in
the case of using Visualization. Visualization is an excellent
tool to deal with the dis-ease and illness in your life. Visualization,
a meditation technique, uses pictures or imagery to balance
the brain and boost our body back to total health. The brain
is divided into two sides - our left logical side and our right
creative side. Most of our life is spent using the left, logical
side of the brain. By using visualization we yield to our right
creative side and produce a balance of the brain. This balance
of the brain aids the natural healing processes of the mind
What is Visualization?
Visualization uses imagery to change your emotions, which changes
your feelings, which then turns into physical sensation that
can relieve or eliminate symptoms.
What is the mind-body connection
and how does it work?
The mental form of the Mind is Emotion and Emotion produces
Feeling. The body s physical form is sensation. When we get
an Emotion it produces a Feeling that turns into a physical
Sensation. (e.g. Watch a scary movie, get frightened, get goose
bumps.) Visualization provides positive images for the mind
that change your emotions that produce a feeling which turns
into a sensation.
That s how you access your mind-body connection.
How Does Visualization Work?
Let s Look at The Brain. Our left part of our brain is our logical
side and the right is our creative
side. Most times we are in logical, left brain mode for survival.
This causes an imbalance in the brain. By yielding to our right
brain we access the mind-body connection which restores balance
of the brain and opens us up to change & renewal.
REMEMBER YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK! SO...THINK POSITIVE!
It has been proven that Negative emotions lower our immune system
and keeps us bogged down mentally. Having negative emotions
delays and stops us from reaching our goals and actually inhibits
the brain in accomplishing what we want. Positive emotions actually
boosts the immune system and makes the brain work in a balanced
mode which is conducive to change.
HOW DO YOU KEEP POSITIVE TO BALANCE YOUR BRAIN?
1. Can't Keep Positive if you try to control situations.
This uses the left brain and puts right side out of balance
and actually creates a Paradox or Contradiction in the brain.
Have you ever wanted something so much that it doesn t happen?
Then when you don't want it, it happens? That's because trying
to control a situation makes your goals rigid and actually inhibits
the mind-body connection in accomplishing what you want.
2. Can't keep positive if you SET expectations,
significance, attitudes or feelings on what we want. Like control,
these make our goals rigid and actually prevents you from accomplishing
what you want.
3. Can't Keep Positive if you worry about what
other people think. We have to recognize who we are and accept
ourselves. Every one of us is special and has special gifts.
It s our choice whether we use them or not.
4. Can't keep positive if you confuse happiness
with fulfillment of desires. Wanting is natural in life but
the idea that we can t be happy unless we satisfy a a certain
desire is not!
5. Can't keep Positive if you insist on being
right or what I call "My Way is the Only Right Way".
The insistence on always being right shows a small view of the
world. It makes you feel safe but stops communication, awareness
of new changes and stops the ability of choice and usually relies
on anger and blame to create a sense of your own independence,
but it all it really does is cut you off from Positive Thought.
6. Can't Keep Positive if you use Rationalization.
This is where you assemble an explanation to conform to your
perspective - But it has no foundation! You falsely attribute
to others your own way of thinking, feeling and acting. No two
people are alike, so this strategy fails. When your head and
heart can t come together it's called rationalization.
7. Can't Keep Positive if you use I SHOULD. This
is usually based on false social beliefs (e.g., wearing a particular
brand of clothing) that keep us plunged into negative feelings
not positive ones.
8. Can t keep positive if you live in the Past
or the Future. This keeps your mind fragmented and stops you
from accomplishing what you want. You can't do anything about
the past - it s over. You can' t do anything about the future
because there are too many variables that could happen. So you
have to learn to Focus on the Moment. Concentrating on the moment
allows you to accept change easier and enjoy each moment of
life. You need to forget the past that is stopping us from what
we want to accomplish and learn to deal with NOW in THIS MOMENT.
By Living in the moment life flows. You then set up loose goals,
put the Intention of what you want to accomplish to workand
then let any attachment to the outcome go so it CAN be accomplished.
Remember focus on the Intention and not the results.
What is Intention? Let's use
the example of eliminating some stress in your life.
1. Intention is NOT trying to control the outcome, like thinking,
"I WILL be stress-free!"
2. Intention is NOT negative thinking, like thinking, "I
ll never be stress free!"
3. Intention is NOT Disillusionment, like thinking, "There
s nothing I can do about this."
4. Intention is NOT the EGO, like thinking, "I can make
myself be stress free."
5. Intention is NOT Rationalization or setting up Expectations
or Rigid Goals like "If I exercise by next week I ll be
Intention IS to FEEL, TRUST & KNOW THAT BEING STRESS-FREE
IS BEING ACCOMPLISHED!
Is it that simple? Yes, if we get rid of the negative
programming in our lives. Remember our body, mind & spirit
are working 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year to manifest what we
want to make us joyful and happy. That s it s job. Visualization
helps put INTENTION to work.
How does Visualization Work?
The procedure to visualization is simple. 1) Find
a quiet place. 2) Define your intention. 3) Concentrate on the
breath and breathing. 4) Begin your visualization. Visualization
usually takes six weeks to work and should be done in the morning
and at night before bedtime. However, many people find results
after the very first time. To effect a successful outcome, you
need to be specific when you define your intention and FEEL,
KNOW and TRUST that it is going to work! Visualization does
work. Try it and see!
Remember to live in the moment, keep positive and ALWAYS, ALWAYS
FEEL, KNOW & TRUST THAT WHAT YOU WANT IS BEING ACCOMPLISHED
AND IT WILL!

Recipe of the Month
Oven Temperature: 350° F
Baking Time: 45-50 min., 8" square pan
30-35 min., 2- 9" cake pans
Preparation: Grease baking pans.
2 cups wheat free flour
1 1/2 teaspoons of xantham gum
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cardamom
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 cup butter (room temperature)
3/4 cup maple syrup
2 eggs, well beaten (room temperature)
1 cup applesauce
1 teaspoon vanilla
Optional: Add 3/4 cups dates or 1 cup raisins or 1 cup chopped nuts.
Sift together flour blend, xantham gum, baking soda, salt and
spices. Cream butter with maple syrup using electric mixer on low-medium
speed until well blended. Add eggs. Using an electric mixer at medium
speed alternately add flour mix and applesauce to creamed butter-maple
syrup mixture, blend until smooth after each addition. Add vanilla
and optional, dates, raisins or chopped nuts.
Pour batter into greased pans and bake at 350° F. Bake 30-35
min. for 2- 8"-or 9" cake pans; 45-50 min. for 8"
or 9" square pans or until inserted wooden toothpick comes
out clean from center of cake. Cool in cake pans 5-10 min. Then
remove and completely cool on wire rack before filling and frosting
with Vanilla Cloud Frosting or eat it plain!
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons light organic corn syrup
2 large egg whites (room temperature)
1/8 teaspoon sea salt teaspoon lemon juice
1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla
Place corn syrup in saucepan and bring to boil stirring constantly.
Place egg whites in a bowl. With electric mixer at high speed beat
egg whites until they hold up in stiff peaks. Add salt and vanilla.Continue
beating at high speed while slowly pouring hot mixture into egg
white mixture. Continue beating at high speed until frosting is
fluffy and spreadable. Frost completely cooled cake.
