A
Tea-Riffic Way to Lose Weight
by Mark "Dr. Tea" Ukra
Radio Host of:
"The Dr. Tea Show"
4th Monday, Every Month, 9am PST
|
|
Look and feel great this summer with Dr. Tea's weight
loss philosophy. Tea has been widely recognized for its amazing
health benefits. It can help boost the immune system; lower blood
sugar and cholesterol; prevent cavities and tooth decay; slow the
aging process; decrease high blood pressure; prevent arthritis;
sharpen mental focus and concentration; reduce the risk of stroke,
heart disease, cancer, and more. It is also highly beneficial for
weight loss.
If you want to make changes in life, you have to change
your thoughts and your habits. There are several commonsense steps
you can take to make that happen:
- Say you can and you will!! Say you can't and you won't. Do not
let saying "I can't" continue to be your excuse for not
changing your life and losing weight. Say you can change your life,
and you will! Say you can lose weight, and you will! If you want
to change what you eat, you have to change how you think about your
food. Focus your energy on drinking tea, eating right, and following
the food plan, and you will lose weight.
- Drink tea all day so that your body is constantly metabolizing.
Scientists agree that an average adult should consume between 2
and 2.5 liters of water per day (that's about eight to ten 8-ounce
glasses). This intake needs to be increased during periods of hot
weather, and during and after periods of physical activity. Your
daily requirement doesn't have to be pure water, however. Tea counts
just as well! I recommend at least eight 8-ounce cups a day. But
most people on the Ultimate Tea Diet (for more info, visit www.ultimateteadiet.com)
fill their 16- or 24-ounce water bottles, sip from them all day,
and refill when necessary.
- Plan your meals for the day. Everything we do starts with our
thoughts. Start the day by thinking about the day's menu, and focus
your energy on carrying out that plan.
- Identify the foods that trigger your bingeing. Everyone has foods
that turn on the urge to overeat. For some people it's bread, for
others it's ice cream, cookies, cake, or candy bars. Even though
drinking tea will help curb those cravings, you have to know which
particular foods will have you fighting against the tea's effects,
and eliminate those foods from your pantry and your diet.
- Eat only when you're hungry and stop eating when you're full.
We all eat for a variety of reasons. Learn to identify your eating
habits (do you eat when you're anxious, happy, stressed, overtired?).
Let your body tell you when you need to refuel for sustenance and
energy, not for comfort or for relief of emotional pain.
- Replace any bad eating habits with a cup of tea. If you have to
have something sweet before bedtime, try a caramel- or chocolate-flavored
tea, or a tea infused with hints of apple, blueberry, or pumpkin
pie (yes, Virginia, they do exist). If what you're about to eat
is not on your plan for the day, find a suitable tea to replace
it-and the pounds will begin to disappear.
So if you're ready to make a change in your life, then go make
yourself a cup of tea-or better yet, brew yourself a whole pot.
Get started on the journey to a slimmer you, healthier you, one
cup of tea at a time. It's as easy as one-two-TEA.
Discover Dr. Tea's guide to good health-one cup at
a time! Dr. Tea's family has 260 years in the tea business, and
he will help you learn the healing benefits of tea and how it helps
mind-body-spirit integration. Mark Ukra, "Dr. Tea," author
of the acclaimed The Ultimate Tea Diet: Boost Your Metabolism,
Shrink Your Appetite, and Kick-Start Remarkable Weight Loss (HarperCollins),
is prominently featured as a tea expert, historian, and representative
of the contemporary tea movement. Dr. Tea and his wife, Julie, and
daughter, Lucky, live in Los Angeles, where they own Tea Garden
& Herbal Emporium (www.teagarden.com)
in West Hollywood. They are constantly spreading the good word about
tea.

From
the Editor's Desk
Isn't it ironic? extols Alanis Morrisette. Indeed, I'm singing
the same tune. June is National Safety Month, and ironically, I'm
healing up from a nasty fall where woman meets lawnmower. Well,
a lawnmower that was left outside in the walkway earlier under daylight
conditions-with my full intention of putting it back soon into its
rightful place, the tool shed- now it's hidden from view in darkness
of the night and inadequate outside lighting.
Within a sheer moment, a mere blink of an eye, unable to see the
lawnmower before me, I tripped and fell down and smacked face-first
into the awaiting metal there below my forward motion feet. A cracked
nose, swollen eye, and bruised, torn knee cap was among the damage
done, along with my then being added to the rising statistics of
safety accidents. Ouch!
Luckily, HealthyLife.Net show host Susun Weed's incredibly rich
and informative Web site (www.susunweed.com) and program ("Green
Blessings," airing the first month of the month, 9-10 a.m.
PT) has lots of great health and well-being advice, and I've been
practicing what she's preaching on taking good care of my bones,
for one thing. I'm personally positive that helped my fall from
resulting in worse outcome. Prevention is key.
According to the National Safety Council (www.nsc.org), falls are
more common than you think. Ranked third among the leading causes
of accidental death in the United States, deaths from falls are
a growing safety concern as the nation's population ages.
Here's some helpful fall prevention tips from NSC:
" Keep living areas well lit and place a night light in the
bathroom.
" Use non-skid throw rugs to reduce chances of slipping on
linoleum.
" Store frequently used items in easy-to-reach areas.
" Exercise regularly. The stronger the body, the more likely
a person is to sustain a fall.
Being that prevention is an important theme here on
Until next month

June Host
of the Month:
Jay Cruz
Host of "The Pursuit of
Happiness"
Wednesdays 2pm PST
|
|
| Each month we
focus on one of our hosts, and this month we are talking to Jay Cruz.
Jay is has
been in radio broadcasting for over 20 years and a former radio host
with KOME & KSJO. He is the owner of Jay Cruz Media where he does
voice over work. |
|
HL-Tell us about your new radio show and what listeners can
expect? The new show is called "Pursuit Of Happiness".
I'm always in pursuit of my own, and enjoy hearing and seeing what
other people are doing to find their happiness. I thought that the
time was right for me to step out of my "comfort zone"
and try a show not totally sports or music-based.
HL-What led you into the world of radio? I think everything
in my life led me into radio. I always had strong reading and verbal
skills in grade school and was offered the narrator part of my school's
version of "A Christmas Carol" the instant we had
tryouts. I would get lost in the world of AM-FM radio stations playing
music or broadcasting games and would do "radio" skits
with neighborhood friends and tape recorders. I grew up in the San
Francisco Bay Area, so there were a lot of great stations and history
to absorb. I eventually started doing punk shows and play-by-play
sports at my college station, KFJC-FM. The music was and still is
as far away from mainstream as possible, so I developed an ear for
the underground there, in addition to
also serving as Program Director. I also had a well-liked heavy
metal show on at KOME-FM in San Jose, which was sort of a dream
come true since that was the rock station I grew up listening to,
and I did get to pick my own music on that show which is rare in
commercial radio. At HealthyLife.Net, I
have hosted a music show, a dating show, and will still host "The
Sporting Life" on the 4th Monday of every month at 2 pm PST.
HL-As an Executive Producer at HealthyLife.Net, working on an
array of programs, what do you do?
My role is ever changing and never ending. In a nutshell, I
become each host's "right hand." I sort of "drive"
and watch for time, make sure that guests and hosts are in sync,
so that they can do their best show and the listener gets to hear
a conversation between two people about what they know best, and
in a silent way I push the buttons that makes that happen. Then
comes the next show, and so forth, in which I try to keep the mothership
flying smooth. There are also production elements like commercials
and station identification that need to get in as well. I do all
of the juggling so our hosts can focus on their content and topics
of entertainment.
HL-As a veteran show host, what can you recommend to someone considering
hosting their own show?
Be humble, confident, and curious. Research and prepare. Now
that sounds like a lot, but it's simple-really. Research and preparation
on your topics, guests, and radio networks is the best place to
build a foundation. Remain curious even if you know a guest or topic
inside and out in order to draw better conversation for the listener.
Stay confident in your ability to host and entertain or else the
listener will sense your struggle. Remain gracious and humble when
you interact with guests you may admire, or
listeners who admire you. Have fun.
HL- What makes HealthyLife.Net such a great venue overall??
Me (hahaha)! It is a network that has a common thread of positive
living all through our hosts and guests. It's very rare to actually
work in an arena that is really working to the common good for all
of us.
HL-Share a favorite quote. What makes it special to you? "If
the grass is greener on the other side of the fence...then water
your lawn..." I think it's from Einstein. I think the quote
is pretty self explanatory in that we have the power to change.
HL-If you could give our readers but one piece of advice in
following your bliss, what would that be? in such hectic and
crazy times that the best way I have found for myself is to try
and keep it simple..too many choices, too much pressure, and stimuli.
Find something you have passion for and do it often.
HL-What's the best way to contact you? For e-mail, jaycruzmedia@yahoo.com
is the best to use, and you can find my
Facebook and MySpace pages with that e-mail. I'm in-between Web
sites right now, so that will work for guests, listeners, and anyone
who needs my voice over services.

Fresh
Corn Chowder with Roasted Peppers
By Scott Stephens and Manny Scaramozzino
o 2 large fresh hot chiles (preferably poblanos)
o 3 large ears fresh sweet corn or 3 cups frozen shoepeg corn
(defrosted)
o 1 small onion
o 2 cloves garlic
o 4 T unsalted butter
o 1½ T cornstarch
o 2 C milk
o 1 C heavy cream
o ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
o ½ tsp black pepper (or to taste)
o ½ cup crumbled farmer's cheese (garnish)
o 2 T chopped parsley (garnish)
Roast, peel, seed, and dice chiles; set aside. If you are
using fresh corn (recommended), shuck and cut niblets from
the cob with a sharp knife. Finely chop onion. Mince garlic.
Place the corn in a food processor. Heat half the butter in
a small skillet, add the onion, and fry until soft, about
7 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook another minute. Scrape
the mixture into the processor with the corn along with the
cornstarch and ¼ cup of water. Process until smooth.
Melt remaining butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.
Add the corn puree and stir constantly for several minutes
until thick. Whisk in the milk, then simmer for about 15 minutes
over low heat, stirring often. Strain the soup through a mesh
sieve. Rinse out the pan, return the strained soup to it,
and stir in the diced chile pepper and cream. Season with
salt and pepper, and simmer over medium heat for a few minutes
more, stirring frequently. When you are ready to serve it,
thin the soup with additional milk if it has become too thick.
Garnish it with cheese and chopped parsley.
Scott: "You'll never buy pre-made corn chowder again
once you have tasted this wonderful Mexican soup. The farmer's
cheese is an especially unusual addition."
Scott Stephens is founder, lead vocalist, and chief songwriter
for Liquid Blue, a multi-award-winning, globally popular,
San Diego-based band. The group, which has won over 100 awards,
was recently named "America's Best Independent Artist"
in the PCT Music Top Talent series. The "Music to Move
You" World Tour has taken the seven-member act to over
90 countries on 6 continents. They have been featured at Madison
Square Garden, Staples Center, Qualcomm Stadium, Petco Park,
Arrowhead Pond, Cox Arena, People's Stadium, Minhang Arena,
Kauffman Stadium, Fleet Center, San Diego Sports Arena, House
of Blues, Pasadena Civic Center, Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino
(Las Vegas), and many other venues. The band also has a major
distribution deal in China, where they've performed before
sold out stadium crowds of over 65,000 fans and have been
seen on Chinese TV by over 700 million viewers. Liquid Blue
is currently sponsored by over 20 of the world's biggest music
manufacturers. The Liquid Blue sound is an exotic fusion of
Western pop melodies with ancient and modern Eastern elements.
The band's critically-acclaimed debut CD, Supernova, has sold
over 35,000 copies. It was produced by David DeVore, (12 multi-platinum
LP's) and mixed by two-time Grammy winner Joe Chiccarelli.
The album was recorded at the legendary Western Recorders
on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. Supernova has been a Top 10 seller
at CD Baby and Liquid Blue is featured on the CD Baby bestsellers
compilation. Tracks from Supernova have been included on 12
compilation releases, alongside artists such as Jane's Addiction,
Le Tigre, Sonic Youth, Jurassic 5, Ani Defranco, Roger Glover,
Pete Seeger, and more. Six songs from Supernova have reached
No.1 on independent music charts The first commercial radio
release from Supernova is the chill song "Real,"
which in March of 2005 became the No.1 indie label song in
the U.S., with over 400 spins per week and No.4 overall on
the Hot AC chart (NMW). Scott, who has a Bachelor of Science
in Fine and Performing Arts from Alaska Pacific University,
is also a licensed State Farm insurance business owner/agent,
and comes from a musical family. At age 16, he founded of
Raw Power Magazine, and did exclusive interviews with many
rock artists, including Ted Nugent, Ozzy, Randy Rhoads Kiss,
Black Sabbath, Blondie, Van Halen, Iggy Pop, Quiet Riot, and
other music notables. Although he is no longer involved, Raw
Power is a thriving multi-million dollar company now called
R.P.M.C. From 1981-1984, Scott was vocalist for The Pacesetters,
who were broadcast live on KYBR-AM radio five nights a week
in Anchorage Alaska. He has performed at clubs and other venues
all over the world, including major arenas like the San Diego
Sports Arena, the Los Angeles Forum, and Mexico City's Sports
Palace. Scott has also made appearances on television series
like "Two on the Town" and "Real People,"
appeared in the movie "Girls Just Want to Have Fun,"
and has appeared in several rock videos. You might also have
seen Scott on television or live-and-in-person while he skated
professionally as part of the famous Thunderbirds rollerball
skate team. He holds an amateur boxing license and is undefeated
in sanctioned competitions. Also an avid surfer, Scott has
reached the quarterfinals of the World Bodysurfing Championships.
