HRN: What got you interested in Sports Medicine?
I've always been a sports fan & enjoyed playing sports, mostly baseball as a kid. In the late 1970s, I met famous sports therapist, former Mr. America Bob Gajda at his Sports Fitness Institute facility in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Athletes of all sports came to rehab & train with Bob, who paid big attention to the role of the foot in sports. As a young podiatrist, this was "music to my ears"!

HRN: Why are the feet important in Sports?
All sports start with our foundation - our feet! Movement, balance, stability, speed! The feet & their mechanics affect all areas above- many persistent lower extremity problems are foot related.

HRN: What is a sports health tip you can give parents?
Parents need to be aware that 75% of time, foot type, (flat feet, high arches), are inherited. Also to make sure their kids are in the right shoe for their sport & are fit properly.

HRN: What talent would you most like to have?
The talent of effective communication and making a difference are key - a sense of humor helps

HRN: What is a foot screening?
Foot screening can include that person's history of problems, their foot structure, watching them stand, walk & balance on one foot, & shoe recommendations.

HRN: How do you relax?
Exercise, walking, meditation are all helpful for relaxing.

HRN: What types of things do you cover on your radio show?
"The Sports Doctor" show includes all aspects of sports medicine, fitness & wellness, both physical & mental, with an array of prominent local, national & international guests in an educational & entertaining format.

Uncover the Treasure of Your True Self

Recipe of the Month

Caper Lemon Poached Fish

Oven Temperature: 400° F
Baking Time: 35-40 min., 1-10" tube pan
Cooking Time: 20 minutes, greased 9'x13' baking pan

2 lbs. firm white fish filets (e.g., flounder, cod, halibut, sole, whitefish)
1/2 cup lemon juice
2 tablespoons capers with liquid
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
1/4 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon parsley
2 tablespoons butter

In a greased 9" x 13" baking pan place fish in a single layer.
Pour lemon juice over fish. Sprinkle fish with capers, salt, pepper, thyme and parsley.
Dot tops of fish with butter. Add water to cover bottom of pan
Cover baking pan with aluminum foil and bake at 400° F for 20 minutes or until fish flakes with a fork.
Remove fish to a warm platter and save liquid for Caper-Lemon Sauce.


Caper-Lemon Sauce:

4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons wheat free flour blend
1 cup liquid (use poaching liquid plus rice milk to make one cup)
2 tablespoons capers
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon of pepper

Melt butter in saucepan. Take off heat and blend in flour, salt and pepper. Whisk in liquid until well blended and put back over heat.
Continue whisking until sauce thickens. Remove from heat and add capers. Spoon over fish and serve.

June - New Beginnings

June to me is about breaking free to start new beginnings. Whether graduating from school, having a wedding or just getting ready to enjoy summer - the energy in the air laughing tugs at your heart and says 'Come on! Let's play!' So forgive yourself and others and remember to begin each day as brand new.. Most times the only thing stopping that from happening is you. So let go, grab that positive attitude and watch for the new opportunities that come every day. Take time each day to stop what you are doing and get into nature - even if it's stopping for just a moment to look up into the sky. We are not alone but part of a great big cosmic adventure and although we play our part we are also actually part of the whole. Remember when you support humanity and nature you are actually supporting yourself - so be kind. We all deserve it - no matter what.
