HRN: What do you define as beauty and why is it important?
I define beauty as Living a long and vibrant life. We believe the rituals of beauty include making choices about the way we take care of our selves from the inside out so we can enjoy a long life full of energy and vitality and allowing our unique expression of beauty to
unfold.

HRN: What is American Made Beauty?
A marketplace that tells the stories, engages consumers interactions and celebrates innovations in beauty and wellness made in America.

HRN: Can you give us a beauty tip for men and women?
Exercise daily, drink clear liquids all day, sleep deeply for 7-8 hours every day and don't sweat the small things. The rest will take care of it's self.

HRN: What is your most treasured possession?
My Saint Christopher metal. I wear most days. I would say my cats Buckwheat and Benny but I think they allow us to live in
our house with them.

HRN: What is your favorite city and why?
The City of Angles. I love Los Angeles because the weather, landscape and vibrant community that inspires intelligence, beauty, health and vitality.

HRN: How do you have fun?
Jazz and Blues Festivals, Exploring new places, people and discovering new innovations in beauty and wellness. My bathtub and massage table are my lab!

HRN: What types of things do you cover on your radio show?
I pull back the curtain on the making of health and beauty brands. From the stories of how iconic brands in the market stated to the cutting edge technologies underway that will bring us the beauty and wellness solutions of the future. We love all stories about mind, body and soul which create and sustain our definition of beauty. If you have a good idea, let me hear from you.

Let Go and Know the Peace of Now

Have you ever watched a mother hold her new child, or seen a doe gently nuzzle her fawn as it stood there balancing on uncertain legs? Did you ever stand outside in the still air washed clean by the passage of a spring storm, or feel yourself moved by the sight of tall trees swaying in a summer's breeze? Maybe your imagination has been caught and held still as you stood looking out over a rugged seacoast, or you've found your attention willingly arrested by some late-afternoon light whose colors made heaven seem not so far away.

All moments like these share a quality of quietness that is timeless, even as they whisper these traits to us in the perfectly present Now. The silence of such stillness is golden because it is uncorrupted; its quiet presence within us enlarges us because through our communion with it we are entered into a relationship with the peace of a vital Now beyond the reach of time.

This full peace, which we might also call stillness or perfect silence, is what our heart of hearts longs to know. Within it there is neither stress nor sorrow. Yet, while most of us agree we seek a way to commingle in the Life of this deep quiet, its timeless realm remains all but imperceptible to us. Here is the reason why: it is a curious spiritual fact that we don't see stillness, even though it acts as the backdrop for all motion.

A short analogy will take us a long way. If we went to a cinema expecting to see a story unfold, complete with movie stars, scenery, action, and interaction, but there was no screen there in the theatre to act as a backdrop for the projection, the showing of that movie would be meaningless. One would see no more than a whirl of indistinguishable light and phantomlike motions projected onto the various protruding walls at the back of the room.

Can we begin to see, in this instance, how the movie screen- that silent backdrop of white stillness that reflects the projected images-is equally essential to our understanding of all the activity that we see displayed upon it? Can we begin to see how without the former in place as a constant, the latter has virtually no context and therefore no real consequence? Much in the same way as the screen in the theatre makes it possible for us to see the action-packed motions of the movie it is an unseen stillness that reveals what we experience as being the ceaseless movement of life.

With this insight in mind, can we recognize how unaware we are at present of this abiding stillness in which we ourselves move and live? It's not that this stillness isn't there-it is! The fact is, it is we, ourselves, who are not present to this unchanging presence! This is a helpful discovery for us to make. Through it, we are able to see that everything that concerns our relationship with fundamental peace depends upon where we place and hold our attention from moment to moment.

ROAD VISION HELP

When driving, eyestrain, eye fatigue and night-blindness can produce confusion, hesitation and decreased alertness when driving. This can contribute to traffic accidents, road rage in other drivers, and sometimes death. Some possible causes of eye strain, eye fatigue and nightblindness can be contributed to:
- aging
- using eyes intently for hours, without rest, in an enclosed space
- poor diet
- improper nutrients
- fatigue
- incorrect vision correction (e.g., wearing improper lenses).

Some of the symptoms of eyestrain, eye fatigue and poor vision are: inability to focus well, redness, tearing,
itchiness, swelling, burning, blurred vision, sensitivity to glare, headaches, decreased concentration,
difficulty adjusting to light, worsening near-sightedness, combination of nicotine, sugar, and caffeine may temporarily affect vision.

Positive ways to handle eyestrain, eye fatigue and poor night vision are:
- Take proper eye supporting nutrients (e.g., bilberry, zinc, lutein, lycopene, Vitamin A, zeaxanthin)
- Take a 10 minute rest. Lie down, close your eyes and place a cold compress on your eyes.
- Take frequent breaks
- Pull over for a moment and focus on something in the distance
- Try to control glare with antireflective coating on your glasses and windshield
- Keep your glasses and windshield clean
- Remove contacts after 24 hours
- Have regular eye exams
- Eat a proper diet (include broccoli, cabbage, carrots, green vegetables, sunflower seeds; avoid sugar)
- Get proper rest

Recipe of the Month

Abstract Applesauce Cake

Oven Temperature: 350° F
Baking Time: 45-50 min., 8" square pan
30-35 min., 2- 9" cake pans
Preparation: Grease baking pans.

2 cups wheat free flour
1 1/2 teaspoons of xantham gum
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cardamom
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 cup butter (room temperature)
3/4 cup maple syrup
2 eggs, well beaten (room temperature)
1 cup applesauce
1 teaspoon vanilla
Optional: Add 3/4 cups dates or 1 cup raisins or 1 cup chopped nuts.

Sift together flour blend, xantham gum, baking soda, salt and spices. Cream butter with maple syrup using electric mixer on low-medium speed until well blended. Add eggs. Using an electric mixer at medium speed alternately add flour mix and applesauce to creamed butter-maple syrup mixture, blend until smooth after each addition. Add vanilla and optional, dates, raisins or chopped nuts.
Pour batter into greased pans and bake at 350° F. Bake 30-35 min. for 2- 8"-or 9" cake pans; 45-50 min. for 8" or 9" square pans or until inserted wooden toothpick comes out clean from center of cake. Cool in cake pans 5-10 min. Then remove and completely cool on wire rack before filling and frosting with Vanilla Cloud Frosting or eat it plain!

Vanilla Cloud Frosting

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons light organic corn syrup
2 large egg whites (room temperature)
1/8 teaspoon sea salt teaspoon lemon juice
1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla

Place corn syrup in saucepan and bring to boil stirring constantly. Place egg whites in a bowl. With electric mixer at high speed beat egg whites until they hold up in stiff peaks. Add salt and vanilla.Continue beating at high speed while slowly pouring hot mixture into egg white mixture. Continue beating at high speed until frosting is fluffy and spreadable. Frost completely cooled cake.

July - Hot Times In the City (and the Country Too!)

July is ripe with the feeling of warmth and with summer the annual rallying cry has again gone out to ants everywhere that it's time to gather and take the hill. The ant march is on! Ants seem to step over the cinnamon sticks, black pepper, and basil left there to repel them. Sometimes it can seem that they are unstoppable. However ants do offer a good example on the power of perseverance.

When you're in that mindset, it seems like nothing can come between you and your goals, dreams, and desires. No matter what challenges and obstacles that may present themselves, you make things happen, even when it feels like one step forward and two steps back. You find away to go up, down, around, over or under obstacles and you find yourself surrounded by inspiration points.
